JAMKIT is a project made during the second Year of the degree program of Systemic Design, for the training module of Design for components and it has been realized in collaboration with Leonardo Brucato, Federica Cipriani and Acher Monllor Mendívil. The project is the result of a deep analysis made around the concept of New ways to interact with people after the pandemic period caused by Covid-19.
The aim of Jamkit is to transform a repetitive duty like house cleaning to an interactive activity, through the addition of music. Furthermore, making a work made often by only one person to a shared moment, with the family or the roommates for example. From the physical point of view, the project consists of a wearable controller that detects movements and gestures and transmits the information to the digital component of the project.
The controller is presented inside a box containing four different controllers and all the additional tools useful for recharging the batteries and setting the preferences.
The digital component, on the other hand, consists of an mobile app through which the user can generate music, customise the different settings of the cleaning session and take advantage of all those gamification elements, such as challenges, points and a community of friends with whom to share their achievements.
The method the group used for the realization of the project started with research about how the pandemic influenced the daily life inside the houses and what changed in the habits of people. This researches have been completed with:
- the analysis of different rooms in the houses;
- a case studies research;
- the realization of a survey with a sample of 148 people;
- the definition of the specific scenario of the cleaning activities.
Then a research about the different personas that could have been the future public of the format helped to define the tone of voice and the main concepts to transmit.
After the definition of the main concept, the researches included an analysis of the state of the art, focusing on literature review about gamification, physical interaction, cleaning for mental and physical health, emotion based design and music education. The work also included the prototyping part about both the digital and the physical part, developing the final functioning prototype, the application with Adobe XD and the Brand identity of the tool.
The output of the work consists in a Journey map book that resumes all the analysis and all the technical aspect of the project, two final prototypes of the procuct, the technical one and the bracelet, a mockup of the final mobile application, realised with Adobe XD, and two videos that show the user experience of the product and how it works.
The name of the brand takes up the two main concepts that identify the project.
A jam session is a meeting (regular or impromptu) of musicians who come together for a musical performance without having anything pre-arranged, usually improvising on known (standard) chord grids and themes.
The term, which probably derives from “Jamu”, a Youruba word (West Africa) meaning “together in concert”, was born in the twenties in jazz circles, and then spread also in rock and, later, in hip hop.
A jam session can have the purpose of entertaining an audience but it can also be a meeting place for musicians who thus have the opportunity to try new musical material and test their skills as improvisers in comparison with other instrumentalists; sometimes it is simply a social gathering. The context of house cleaning, on the other hand, is something that often and willingly requires a set of tools or a kit to perform different actions.
The idea is to associate the concept of an expeditious musical session with cleaning, using a simple and practical “kit” that allows you to perform music without the need to possess musical skills.
The Visual of Jam kit is characterised by colored fluid strips that refer to the behavior of fluids in contact with vibrations, generated by music. Those elements reappear in digital media in different situations: in the representation of vibrations during the recording of one’s cleaning jam, in the setting of the settings, in one’s personal area with one’s own goals achieved, in the page dedicated to the various recordings.
The digital support of the app has been developed with the aim of monitoring your cleaning session and being able to develop a community of users with whom to share their goals and challenge each other.
The app was mainly developed with the idea of including:
